Baccara is a Spanish disco duo that was considered the world's most successful female singing duo from 1977 to 1979. It is named after the Baccarat rose .
history
Beginnings
Mayte Mateos , born on February 7, 1951 in Logroño , and María Mendiola , born on April 4, 1952 in Madrid , met in November 1973 at the Spanish television ballet. As flamenco dancers and singers, they started their own business in Spain as the duo 'Venus' and performed on Fuerteventura , where they were discovered in January 1977 by Leon Deane, Fred Dieckmann and Patrick Kavetz (all RCA , today: Sony Music ) .
The first album Baccara was partially recorded by the German producers Rolf Soja and Frank Dostal in the Maschen recording studio and was a huge success. Peter Zentner and Tore Syvertsen were also involved. The released singles Yes Sir, I Can Boogie and Sorry, I'm a Lady became number 1 hits across Europe in 1977 and are now considered disco classics. Yes Sir, I Can Boogie was number 1 in 18 countries. In Germany, the record is one of the best-selling singles of all time.
In England, baccarat was the first Spanish group and the first female singing duo to make it to the top of the charts. 1978 and 1979 followed other successful singles such as Darling, The Devil Sent You to Lorado and Ay, Ay Sailor.
1977 performed Baccara with the title Mad in Madrid for Germany at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo. With the song Parlez-vous français? represented the duo Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest 1978 and reached seventh place.
Marisa Perez Baccarat
In the late 1970s, she made regular appearances on the French Sacha Show as well as on West and East German television in the music store , disco and Ein Kessel Buntes .
In 1979, Baccarat recorded the title Eins plus one is one, sung in German, as part of the “Year of the Child” proclaimed by UNICEF .
separation
After legal disputes, Mateos and Mendiola finally parted ways in 1982. Both initially pursued solo projects and later founded their own new singing duo one after the other.
